Fairphone introduced Fairbuds on 9 April 2024 with batteries that could be replaced in both the wireless earbuds and their charging case. The company's launch announcement described seven interchangeable spare parts. Its practical proposition was to give owners an alternative to replacing a complete set when one component needed attention. This was a product-design announcement, not evidence that every owner would achieve a particular service life.
A different unit of replacement
For a buyer, the important distinction is between buying an audio set and maintaining its individual elements. If a component can be replaced separately, the decision can move from choosing an entirely new product to identifying the part that needs attention. That changes the question being asked; it does not, by itself, settle the cost or convenience of the answer.

What a repairable design still needs
- A clear way to identify the component that requires replacement.
- A compatible spare part that can actually be obtained.
- Instructions and support suited to the task.
- A comparison between the complete repair cost and the available alternatives.
These are editorial questions for evaluating the business model, not findings that the manufacturer has failed to meet them. The launch establishes the intended modular approach. It cannot show what stock levels, delivery times or individual repair outcomes will be years later.
Longevity is an outcome, not just a feature
A replaceable battery creates an option. Whether that option extends the useful life of a particular set depends on what has failed and whether the rest of the device still meets its owner's needs. It would therefore be misleading to turn the announcement into a fixed number of extra years or a guaranteed saving for every customer.
The distinction also matters when discussing waste. Replacing a smaller component and discarding an entire set are different actions, but a claim about their environmental effects needs a defined comparison. The commercial question raised by the launch is how a product remains useful after its first component wears out. Fairbuds brought that question into the design of compact wireless audio.
