Michigan LIFT brings together manufacturing commitments

Michigan LIFT connects supplier proposals with industrial buyers, potential debt finance and production support, subject to normal approvals.

Ford, JPMorganChase, the State of Michigan, Michigan Central and Newlab have announced Michigan LIFT, a platform intended to connect industrial buyers with suppliers capable of expanding production. The initiative was launched in Detroit on 29 September and covered by Manufacturing Dive on 30 September. Its full name is the Michigan Launchpad for Industrial Innovation and Transformation.

Demand and finance have distinct roles

The official launch announcement describes aspirations subject to participants' normal qualification and approval processes. Ford aims to award up to $1 billion in supplier business over the coming decade. JPMorganChase aims to provide up to $1 billion in debt financing to participating suppliers. These figures represent different commercial activities; they are not a report of money already spent.

Michigan Central, Newlab and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation aim to attract additional buyers representing more than $1 billion in annual demand by the end of 2036. Annual demand at that future date should not be read as the same measure as cumulative contracts or finance over a decade. The initiative brings those functions together while keeping each participant's approval process in place.

From an industrial problem to a supplier proposal

Industrial buyers will identify manufacturing and supply-chain problems through open calls. Eligible supplier responses will be referred to the relevant buyer for evaluation. Where an opportunity advances, the platform is intended to coordinate potential finance, public resources and support for industrialisation. Participation therefore does not itself establish an awarded contract or approved loan.

Michigan Central is expected to provide a physical environment for testing and scaling. Newlab aims to contribute $20 million in support provided in kind. Separately, Ford Philanthropy and JPMorganChase announced $550,000 of combined support for Focus: HOPE's industrial training work. These forms of support should remain distinct from the platform's contract, finance and demand aspirations.
