MTS announced TR QR payments in Turkey through My MTS on 12 March 2025.
Payment conditions
- Open Money, select QR payment and scan the merchant's code.
- Use a subscriber account or a Russian bank card.
- Roubles are converted at the transaction-time rate.
- The iOS and Android app needs internet access.
The company described payments as commission-free. Turkey was the first destination; further countries were planned.
MTS said the national format was used by most local shops, restaurants and other retail outlets.
Travel connectivity
The company's earlier connectivity product is a prepaid electronic SIM for international travellers offered through MTS Payment. Its 28 November 2024 announcement described internet access from operators in more than 200 countries and regions, available to customers of any mobile operator using compatible smartphones or tablets.
That statement described activation through a QR code sent by email. The package period starts when the eSIM connects to a supported network, with validity of seven to thirty days depending on the tariff. This is the connectivity product, not the merchant code scanned to pay for a purchase.
The standard used at the point of sale
TR QR is Turkey's national payment-code format, not a proprietary MTS code. The central bank's 21 August 2020 announcement explained that a common structure and rules were intended to make payment-system operators interoperable. It presented standardisation as a way to widen acceptance of digital retail payments and reduce reliance on banknotes.
The accompanying regulation and technical principles entered into force with publication in Official Gazette No. 31220. This identifies the origin of the format named by MTS; it does not establish the telecommunications company's settlement partners or guarantee acceptance at every Turkish merchant.
