Nintendo announced two US Switch 2 packages on April 2, 2025, with a June 5 launch planned. The console would cost $449.99; a $499.99 bundle would include a Mario Kart World download code.

The newly announced console

Nintendo published the launch details at https://www.nintendo.com/us/whatsnew/nintendo-switch-2-launches-june-5-bringing-new-forms-of-game-communication-to-life/.

The hardware also featured an additional USB-C port at the top and an adjustable stand.

The January first look

On January 16, Nintendo had announced a dedicated presentation for April 2. It also outlined a programme of hands-on experiences before the planned launch, with attendance requiring a Nintendo Account. New York's event was scheduled for April 4–6 and London's for April 11–13. The January announcement listed experience events across North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. These were opportunities for visitors to try the hardware in person.

An earlier addition to the hardware family

In a separate announcement dated July 6, 2021, Nintendo had presented the Switch OLED Model, scheduled for October 8 at $349.99. Its hardware included:

The white set paired white controllers with a black main unit and white dock. A neon red/neon blue set was also announced.

The 2021 announcement also specified enhanced audio for handheld and tabletop play, within a similar overall enclosure size.

Preparing development tools

In the company's April 2 developer interview, producer Kouichi Kawamoto said the three lead developers began working together around 2019, following earlier research. The team prioritised time-consuming components so game developers could receive software-development tools in time. Technical director Tetsuya Sasaki explained that Nintendo builds its own operating system. Background work includes downloading another game's data during play.
