
Spotify began its Premium lossless rollout in September 2025, with Wi-Fi, cellular and download settings.
The announced format
Spotify specified FLAC at up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz. The rollout was gradual, with more than fifty markets planned through October.

- Mobile, desktop and tablet applications.
- Compatible Spotify Connect devices, including Sony, Bose, Samsung and Sennheiser products.
- Support for Sonos and Amazon devices was announced for the following month.
Compression without discarding information
The format's specification is open, and its reference software implementation is open source. Published in December 2024, the Internet Engineering Task Force's RFC 9639 describes FLAC as reducing the storage space required for digital audio without losing information. Decompression restores the original data: lossless does not mean uncompressed. The specification describes pulse-code-modulated audio and defines bit depth as the number of bits used for each sample. It also distinguishes lossless compression from lossy coding, which removes, irreversibly changes or approximates information to reduce storage further. These definitions explain the announced format, not a listening-test result.
The service before the release
In results published on 29 July 2025, Spotify reported 696 million monthly active users in the second quarter, an increase of 11% from a year earlier. Revenue rose 10% to €4.2 billion, while operating income reached €406 million. The company also reported that subscriber net additions in the first half of 2025 had grown by more than 30% compared with the same period in 2024. Those results preceded September's announcement; they measure the broader business rather than use of the subsequently introduced audio option.
