Spotify is introducing full-length music videos for Premium subscribers in a limited beta beginning on 13 March 2024. The initial catalogue includes Ed Sheeran and Aluna, with availability restricted to eleven markets rather than the service's entire international audience.
Where the test begins
- Europe: United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and Sweden.
- Latin America: Brazil and Colombia.
- Asia and Africa: Philippines, Indonesia and Kenya.
The launch brings Spotify into competition with existing music-video services, including Apple Music and YouTube. Reuters reported that Spotify was pursuing a longer-term target of one billion users by 2030.
Changing playback modes
For a supported track, subscribers can select the video control in the playback screen. The clip starts from the beginning, rather than continuing from the audio position. A separate control returns playback to audio. The beta supports iOS, Android, desktop and television devices; rotating a mobile device horizontally enables full-screen viewing.
Spotify plans to use feedback from listeners and artists as it develops the test. Expansion of the catalogue and country coverage remains a future intention, not part of the initial availability.
How full videos differ from artist Clips
The new format follows a separate artist-video feature announced on 8 March 2023. Spotify Clips are shorter than thirty seconds and can appear on artist profiles and album pages. Artists can use these short videos to introduce an upcoming song, explain its background or promote a release.
The television listening interface
Spotify's television application had received a separate redesign on 9 November 2023. That update added a controllable listening queue, a dimmed display mode and easier switching between household profiles. The active profile appears in the upper-right corner. These existing interface features are separate from the new music-video beta.
Company and press contact
Spotify Technology S.A. launched its service in 2008. In its 6 February 2024 corporate announcement, it reported more than 602 million users, including 236 million subscribers, across 184 markets. Those platform-wide figures precede the video test and do not describe its audience.
