Visa announced Flexible Credential expansion with Affirm in the United States and Liv in the United Arab Emirates on 12 November 2024.
Existing markets and the next expansion
Reuters reported availability in Hong Kong, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Mark Nelsen, Visa's global head of consumer products, said European expansion was planned in the coming months. Affirm had 1.4 million active cardholders at the time of the announcement; that figure described its cardholder base, not completed migrations to the new feature.
Different partner uses
- Affirm users could request purchase-specific instalment plans in its application, subject to eligibility checks.
- Liv's offering would route transactions to the matching currency account, covering US dollars, sterling, euros, Canadian dollars and Australian dollars.
Visa also described an Olive-card business/personal-account feature in Japan that it would continue testing with Sumitomo Mitsui Card Company.
The pilot reported earlier in 2024
In its 16 May explanation, Visa reported approximately $3 billion processed through the Flexible Credential pilot. It described using existing acceptance infrastructure to capture and route transactions according to customers' selected preferences. This was the company's earlier pilot-volume disclosure, not a November total or a measure of transactions made through the newly announced American and Emirati partners. The May article had described a US pilot as forthcoming later that year.
Olive's earlier development
SMFG's 2023 annual-report discussion dated Olive's launch to 1 March 2023. Project participants described combining banking and card-company services within one application, with SBI Securities participating as the digital brokerage. That account describes the earlier Japanese integrated service, rather than the separate November expansion into two further markets.
